Lynn is a city on the North Shore located seven miles from downtown Boston. It was founded as part of Saugus in 1631 and incorporated as its own city in 1850. As of 2010, Lynn is ranked ninth in Massachusetts with a population of 90,329. It is made up of a mixture of both urban and suburban areas, covering 10.8 square miles of land and 2.7 square miles of water. Lynn is home to several large employers, including General Electric Aviation, West Lynn Creamery (now a part of Garelick Farms), and Durkee-Mower (creators of Marshmallow Fluff). Lynn also encompasses one of the largest cemeteries in the country, Pine Grove Cemetery, and the second largest municipal park in the country (covering 3.4 square miles), known as Lynn Woods Reservation. The city claims to be the home of the first iron works, first fire engine, first American jet engine, first American dance academy, and first roast beef sandwich.

Workers’ compensation laws provide for specific but limited benefits to workers injured while on the job. In general, all workers’ compensation laws offer medical benefits for emergency medical care, visits to the doctor, and time spent in the hospital. Often, workers’ compensation does not take into account the full extent of injuries, such as loss of future earning potential or pain and suffering. Massachusetts has some of the lowest workers’ compensation rates in the country. In 2010, Massachusetts ranked 44th with an index rate of 1.54 representing the average premium per $100 of payroll. The median value was 2.04 and Montana had the highest cost with an index rate of 3.33. Massachusetts has also ranked near the top for the past ten years for having some of the highest workers’ compensation benefits.
